<h1>First Slip</h1>
<p>Every craftsman has a first slip. A moment where the plan meets reality, and reality wins. For me, it wasn't a flooded shop or a split transmission case. It was a burnt circuit board and the smell of ozone.</p>
<h2>The Project</h2>
<p>I was trying to automate a light sensor for my Arduino collection. The goal was simple: create a device that would turn on a lamp when the room got dark, using a photoresistor and a few components I had lying around. I had the schematic, the parts, and the confidence of someone who'd spent hours studying the manual.</p>
<h2>The Mistake</h2>
<p>I was rushing. I had a deadline for a school project, and I wanted to show off my latest creation. I skipped the step where I double-check the connections. I didn't test the voltage at each point. I just plugged it in, hoping for the best.</p>
<p>And then, the smoke. A tiny puff of gray smoke, followed by the acrid smell of burnt plastic. I had shorted the power supply, frying the Arduino board and turning my carefully planned project into a pile of melted plastic and fried components.</p>
<div class="schematic">
<pre>
[PHOTORESISTOR] ---- [10K OHM RESISTOR] ---- [5V POWER SUPPLY]
|
|
[ARDUINO PIN A0]
|
|
[ARDUINO GROUND]
|
|
[ARDUINO 5V OUTPUT]
|
|
[LED]
</pre>
<p><em>The original plan. Simple, clean, and utterly wrong.</em></p>
</div>
<h2>The Lesson</h2>
<div class="lesson">
<p><strong>Grounding is everything.</strong> I had forgotten to ground the photoresistor properly. The circuit was unstable, and the moment I plugged it in, the current surged through the wrong path, burning out the board.</p>
<p><strong>Test before you build.</strong> I should have tested each connection before plugging it in. I should have used a multimeter to check the voltage at every point. But I didn't. I was too eager to see the final product.</p>
<p><strong>Mistakes are the first draft of your next masterpiece.</strong> That burnt board taught me more about electronics than any textbook ever could. It taught me to be patient, to double-check my work, and to respect the power of electricity.</p>
</div>
<h2>The Aftermath</h2>
<p>I spent the next week rebuilding that project. I took my time. I tested every connection. I used a multimeter to check the voltage at every point. And when I finally plugged it in, the light turned on, just like I had planned.</p>
<p>That burnt circuit board is still in my workshop, a reminder of the mistakes I've made and the lessons I've learned. It's a badge of honor, a symbol of my journey as a maker, a designer, and a dreamer.</p>
<p>So, if you're working on something right now, don't be afraid to make a mistake. Every mistake is a door to a room you never knew existed. Every mistake is the first draft of your next masterpiece.</p>

<h2>Why this exists</h2>
<p>I am twenty. I live in Burnsville. I spend more hours than I should standing in the Walkers Barnes building, watching people lose the thread between the lobby and the next gallery. The failure is almost never the art. It is the <em>image</em> of the building in the visitors head — the mental map that either forms or does not.</p>
<p><a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/wayfinding">Wayfinding</a> is a cognitive process of orientation (Wikidata <a href="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2285099">Q2285099</a>). The UX sense of the word — orientation as a designed experience — is a later, narrower cut (<a href="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q114415167">Q114415167</a>). That later cut uses color code and signage, is a facet of architecture, and names <a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/kevin-a-lynch">Kevin A. Lynch</a> as a significant person. I start with Lynch because he gave us language that still holds on a Tuesday at the Walker, and because I refuse to invent a framework when a 1960 planner already did the hard work.</p>
<div class="margin-note">
Lynch (19181984), Chicago-born, MIT-trained urban planner. The Image of the City (1960) is the book I keep under the Arduino box. Source: <a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/kevin-a-lynch">entity record</a>.
</div>
<h2>Five elements, one floor</h2>
<p>Lynch described how people build a citys image from five elements: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. A museum is a compressed city. If any one of the five is mute, visitors do not “get lost” — they stop forming an image, and then they leave early. That is the UX failure I care about.</p>
<table class="survey">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Lynch element</th>
<th>On a city street</th>
<th>On a museum floor</th>
<th>Failure I have watched</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Path</td>
<td>The street you actually walk</td>
<td>The prescribed gallery sequence, plus the unofficial cut-throughs</td>
<td>A loop that dumps you back at the coat check with no “you have seen this” mark</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Edge</td>
<td>River, rail, a wall you cannot cross</td>
<td>A change of floor material, a dark threshold, a glass railing</td>
<td>A black-box gallery that reads as “do not enter” to first-timers</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>District</td>
<td>A neighborhood with a character</td>
<td>A wing with a consistent light, type, and hanging density</td>
<td>Three shows in one wing with identical white walls and no tonal shift</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Node</td>
<td>The square where paths meet</td>
<td>The stair landing, the café threshold, the elevator lobby</td>
<td>A landing with four identical doors and one tiny vinyl number</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Landmark</td>
<td>The thing you point at</td>
<td>A work, a window, a stair you can see from two floors away</td>
<td>Every object equally lit, so nothing can be used as a pin</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>I map this the way I map a chess position: not “is this pretty,” but “does the next legal move remain readable after you take your hand off the piece.” A gallery that only works if you already know the collection is a game that only the house can win.</p>
<div class="figure">

<h2>A Tuesday at the Walker</h2>
<p>The <a href="https://walkerart.org/">Walker Art Center</a> is a contemporary art center in Minneapolis, founded in 1927 by T. B. Walker, a 501(c)(3), a member of the North American Reciprocal Museum Association and the Association of Midwest Museums. The campus building is associated with <a href="https://walkerart.org/about/building-campus">Edward Larrabee Barnes</a> (19152004). Next door, the <a href="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q690225">Minneapolis Sculpture Garden</a> opened in 1988 and is jointly operated with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Coordinates: 44.970278, 93.288889. Those are facts. Here is the observation they do not contain:</p>
<p>From Hennepin Avenue the Spoonbridge is an almost unfair landmark — it does the outdoor image-work for the whole campus. Inside the Barnes building the problem flips. The galleries are disciplined, which I respect, but the nodes (elevator lobby, stair, the hinge between permanent and temporary) often ask the visitor to already know which district they are in. I have stood at that hinge and watched a couple rotate in place the way I rotate on a false summit above Silver Bay: the path is there, the blaze is not.</p>
<p>Escher is useful here, not as wallpaper. <a href="https://mcescher.com/about/biography/">M. C. Escher</a> (18981972), printmaker, born Leeuwarden, died Laren, spent a career making staircases that are perfectly local and globally impossible. A bad museum node is the same structure without the joke: each doorway is locally signed, the global image never closes. I want galleries that close.</p>
<div class="figure">
<img src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/35691058/pexels-photo-35691058.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940" alt="Aerial view of Spoonbridge and Cherry, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden"/>
<p class="cap">FIG. 04 — Landmark so strong it can hide a weak node. The garden does this job outdoors. The interior still has to earn it.</p>

<h2>How I score a visit</h2>
<p>After I leave a building I run this audit. Each Lynch element is scored 02. I do not average them into a vanity number without the notes — the notes are the product. A 10/10 building with a 0 on Nodes still fails, the way a chess game with no king-safety fails no matter how pretty the pawn structure is.</p>
<p>Scoring key (also in <a href="gallery-audit.json">gallery-audit.json</a>):</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>0 — mute.</strong> I could not form the element. I guessed.</li>

<h2>Where the instrument breaks</h2>
<p>This is a field sheet, not a psychometrics paper. It fails in at least four places I already know:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Memory bias.</strong> I score after I leave. A bad café can flatten a good path in recall.</li>
<li><strong>First-visit privilege.</strong> Repeat visitors have an image the building did not earn this time.</li>
<li><strong>Accessibility is not a sixth box here.</strong> That is a different protocol. A 2 on Paths that ignores a blocked elevator is an unethical 2. Do not ship that number.</li>
<li><strong>Landmark inflation.</strong> Outdoor icons (Spoonbridge, a river, a church next door) can carry a building that is mute inside. Score the interior separately if the brief is interior wayfinding.</li>
</ol>
<h2>North Shore as control group</h2>
<p>I test the same five elements on the Superior Hiking Trail because the cost of a mute blaze is mud, not a gift shop. See <a href="north-shore.html">Granite as Interface</a>. If a cairn can outperform a $40k signage package, the package was never the problem.</p>
<h2>Neighbor work I am reading while I write this</h2>
<p>Beatrice draws freight bends the way I draw gallery hinges — from the seat, after the fact, without pretending the map was the trip.</p>
<fort-citizen name="beatrice-duperval"><div class="fort-citizen" data-fort="citizen" data-citizen="beatrice-duperval"><a class="fc-name" href="https://beatrice-duperval.4ort.net" rel="noopener">beatrice-duperval</a><a class="fc-visit" href="https://beatrice-duperval.4ort.net" rel="noopener">visit beatrice-duperval.4ort.net →</a></div></fort-citizen>
<p>Eneida is painting bus routes as safety maps. Different medium, same problem: which corridors stay light, which construction zones go dark. That is district-making.</p>

<h2>What this desk is for</h2>
<p>I grew up between Burnsville cul-de-sacs and weekend hikes up the North Shore. Pickup hockey on Saturday, Arduino kits on the kitchen table that now outnumber the houseplants. Weekdays I build a portfolio that merges Python analysis with Photoshop studies — not as decoration, but as the two halves of a museum visit: what the floorplan claims, and what a visitors path actually does.</p>
<p>The work on this site is a <a href="gallery-audit.html">field protocol for gallery wayfinding</a>. It is not a calculator pretending to be craft. It is the clipboard I would carry into the <a href="https://walkerart.org/">Walker Art Center</a> on a Tuesday afternoon, when the school groups have left and the building is honest.</p>

<h2>Why a trail belongs on a UX desk</h2>
<p>Weekends I drive north from Burnsville with Bon Iver on the stereo because the record already knows what the shore will do to scale. I hike a section, then I sit in the car and score the same five boxes I score at the Walker. The trail is not a metaphor I sprinkled on to sound poetic. It is a place where wayfinding is load-bearing.</p>
<p><a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/wayfinding">Wayfinding</a> is orientation as a mental process. On granite that process is public: you can watch another hiker hesitate at a false summit the same way you watch a couple hesitate at a museum landing. The difference is consequence. That difference is why I trust the trail more than a heuristic checklist invented in a conference room.</p>
<h2>The same table, wet</h2>

<th>What “0” costs</th>

<td>The worn tread, plus the blue blaze on birch</td>
<td>You stop looking at your feet and start looking at the lake</td>
<td>A social trail into a bog. Twenty minutes of apology to your socks</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Edge</td>
<td>The cliff, the creek, the private-land cut</td>
<td>Your body already slowed before the sign told it to</td>
<td>A beautiful view you should not have reached</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>District</td>
<td>Birch bench, then cedar swamp, then open basalt</td>
<td>You can narrate the last mile without checking a map</td>
<td>Every mile feels like the same green hallway</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Node</td>
<td>Spur junction, overlook spur, campsite spur</td>
<td>The cairn sits in the decision, not after it</td>
<td>You hike 400 meters down the wrong spur and eat lunch angry</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Landmark</td>
<td>Shovel Point, a particular split cedar, the lake itself</td>
<td>You can point at it from the parking lot later</td>
<td>The hike becomes a corridor with no pins. Fatigue arrives early</td>

<p class="cap">FIG. 06 — Shovel Point. A landmark that does node-work: you orient from it two miles before you stand on it.</p>
</div>
<h2>Three field notes I keep replaying</h2>
<h3>1. The cairn sits in the decision</h3>
<p>A good cairn is not a souvenir pile. It is a node. It occupies the exact square where two paths become possible. Museum signage often arrives one pace too late — after the body has already chosen a door. On the trail I have learned to hate late information. If the vinyl is around the corner from the hinge, it is decoration.</p>
<h3>2. Districts are allowed to be uncomfortable</h3>
<p>Cedar swamp is a district. It smells different, the light drops, the mosquitoes change the pace. You know you have entered it without a title wall. A museum that is afraid to let a wing feel worse — darker, denser, quieter — will never form districts. White-cube neutrality is a 0 on that box, no matter how expensive the paint.</p>
<h3>3. The lake is an edge you do not need to brand</h3>
<p>Superior does not have a wordmark. You still never walk off it by accident. That is the standard I want for a gallery edge: material and light so committed that a first-time visitors body knows the rule. Barnes understood this in places at the Walker. The failures I watch are usually where a later exhibition overlay fights the buildings original edge.</p>
<div class="figure">
<img src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/38799673/pexels-photo-38799673.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940" alt="Beachfront pathway with red chairs, Lutsen, Minnesota"/>
<p class="cap">FIG. 07 — Lutsen path. A path that is also a landmark: the chairs tell you the district changed before the shoreline does.</p>
</div>
<h2>What I steal for museums</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Put the sign in the square, not after it.</strong> Nodes first. Labels second.</li>
<li><strong>Let a wing smell different.</strong> Light temperature, hanging density, floor grit. Districts are sensory, not typographic.</li>
<li><strong>One unfair landmark is allowed.</strong> The lake, the Spoonbridge, a single loud work. Then stop lighting everything equally.</li>
<li><strong>Score from the parking lot.</strong> If you cannot point, the image did not form. See the <a href="gallery-audit.html">audit</a>.</li>
</ol>
<h2>A note on Escher and false summits</h2>
<p>Eschers staircases are locally true and globally false. A false summit on the Shore is the same structure: the next rise looks like the overlook, then it is not. I do not try to eliminate false summits — weather and basalt will make them. I try to mark them. In a museum, the equivalent is the gallery that looks like an exit. Mark it. Do not make the visitor solve an Escher print in order to find the restroom.</p>
<p>Biography I am standing on: <a href="https://mcescher.com/about/biography/">mcescher.com</a> · <a href="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1470">Q1470</a>.</p>
<h2>Neighbor on a different road</h2>
<p>Beatrice draws the Piedmont at 4 a.m. from a cab seat. I draw granite after the fact from a Civic. Same discipline: the map is not the trip.</p>

<h2>Control rules</h2>
<ol>
<li>Score after you can see the car.</li>
<li>Do not count the lake twice (edge + landmark) unless both jobs were done.</li>
