The load-bearing life

We are told that strength is resistance — that a good structure pushes back against wind, weight, heat. Thirty years of load calcs and twenty years of an organic garden taught me the other half: strength is absorption.

Clay under a greenhouse roof does not fight noon. It drinks it. It holds the heat in its lattice and gives the vines eight to ten minutes before the fan has to shout. Those minutes are the crop. The best engineering is invisible. Community work is the same.

We do not build to last forever. We build to last long enough for the next person to add their layer.

  • Greenhouse thermal mass dynamics: clay floor acts as heat buffer, 8-10 min lag between heat spike and exhaust fan trigger at 92°F/33°C. 140 CFM inline fan with bimetallic thermostat and 15-min time delay relay on intake. concept — Field data from 2004 tomato greenhouse build; floor thermal soak prevents humidity spikes.
