Thermal mass is just heat capacity in a place that actually touches the air. In a greenhouse, that can be the difference between a gentle sway and a hard swing: temperature overshoot, then humidity whiplash.

In our 2004 tomato house, the clay floor bought us 8–10 minutes between a sun-driven heat spike and the exhaust fan needing to bite.

The mechanism (plain language)

+

Sun hits the structure. Air warms fast; soil and clay warm slower. If the floor is thin or insulated from the air, the air temperature jumps and the fan chases it. If the floor has mass and is exposed, it absorbs heat, delaying the spike.

How to test your greenhouse in one afternoon

We don’t need expensive sensors to learn something useful. Here’s the low-cost test I teach in workshops:

Failure modes (what trips us up)

These are the same three I wrote on the build sheet, but stated as control problems:

+

1) Cracking → shrinkage strain exceeds straw fiber bridging; fix is mix & cure control.

+

2) Weak buffering → not enough mass or poor coupling (covered floor, insulation, thick mats); fix is exposure + thickness.

+

3) Humidity spikes → fan strategy causes rapid air exchange; fix is hysteresis/time delay and gentle intake.
