<h1>The far-corner floor protocol</h1>
|
||
|
|
<p class="deck">How I read a room in Lexington humidity, where I start, and the three things I will not put on oak even if a customer asks nicely. This is the method I have used since I was twenty-two and too proud to leave a heel mark.</p>

<p><a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/cleaning">Cleaning</a> is maintenance, a service, and part of everyday culture — which is a fancy way of saying it is how a house keeps being a house. <a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/spring-cleaning">Spring cleaning</a> is the same work with the windows open. I do not wait for April. In Fayette County the humidity does the waiting for you: oak swells in June, shrinks in January, and a puddle left overnight will leave a pale scar you cannot polish out.</p>

|
||
|
|
<p class="pull">Start at the far corner and back yourself to the door. If you walk on what you just washed, you have not washed it.</p>
|
||
|
|
|
||
|
|
<h2>Reading the room before the bucket</h2>
|
||
|
|
<p>I take my shoes off in the mudroom and walk the floor once in socks. Heel marks show as grey commas. Pet traffic is a dull path between the food bowl and the back door. Under the dining table there will be a constellation of gravy and wax if anyone in the house is a candle person. Church fellowship halls are honest: they tell you exactly where the coffee urn sat.</p>

|
|
<p>Then I look at the finish. Polyurethane oak wants almost no water. Old linoleum in a 1940s cottage wants a little more, and a nylon scrub pad on the black heel marks. Unglazed quarry tile in a horse-farm mudroom wants a stiff brush and patience, not a steam machine that will drive clay deeper into the grout.</p>

||
|
|
<h2>The order I will not rearrange</h2>
|
||
|
|

<h3>One room, start to dry</h3>
|
||
|
|
<ol>
|
||
|
|
<li><strong>Clear.</strong> Chairs up on the table, rugs out on the porch rail, dog bowls in the sink. If I mop around an object I will mop around a stain.</li>
|
||
|
|
<li><strong>Dry soil first.</strong> Broom or vacuum with the beater bar off. Grit under a wet rag is sandpaper. I work the edges with a horsehair brush; Lexington dust loves baseboards.</li>
|
||
|
|
<li><strong>Spot the protein and the dye.</strong> Blood, egg, and gravy get cold water first. Red punch and berry get a blot, not a rub. I do this on my knees so I can see.</li>
|
||
|
|
<li><strong>The wash.</strong> Cotton rag, wrung until it will not drip if I hold it over the bucket. I mop a three-board width, with the grain, and I rinse the rag more often than feels efficient.</li>
|
||
|
|
<li><strong>The air.</strong> Windows if the pollen is not flying. A box fan in the doorway aimed out. A floor that stays wet in our August is a floor that will cup.</li>
|

|
<h3>What goes in the bucket</h3>
|
||
|
|
<p>For sealed hardwood: a teaspoon of mild dish soap in a gallon of warm water, or a cup of <a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/white-vinegar">white vinegar</a> in that same gallon if the floor is dull with residue. Never both at once — soap and acid fight, and you get smears. For vinyl and linoleum I will go a little stronger on the vinegar. For waxed wood I use no vinegar at all; it bites the wax and then everyone wants to know why the dining room looks thirsty.</p>

|
<strong>Three things I will not put on oak.</strong> Oil soap as a weekly habit (it builds a film that grabs dirt). Steam (it lifts finish and cups boards). Rosemary water as a floor wash (see <a href="rosemary.html">the herb notes</a> — lovely on a handle, treacherous under a sock). If a customer has a bottle of “hardwood shine,” I smile and leave it under the sink.

<h2>Lexington particularities</h2>
|
||
|
|
<p>We live in a city founded in 1775, consolidated with Fayette County in 1974, and still full of houses that were built when people expected a rug in the parlor and bare wood in the kitchen. The limestone dust from a nearby walkway will film a dark stain overnight. After the <a href="https://4ort.xyz/entity/kentucky-derby">Kentucky Derby</a> — run at Churchill Downs since 1875 — I get calls from folks who hosted a hat party and discovered red punch in the hallway at midnight. Punch is dye. Blot, cold water, then patience. Do not reach for bleach on oak. Ever.</p>

||
|
|
<p>Horse-farm mud is clay. Let it dry. Sweep it. Then a barely-damp rag. Wet clay is pottery, and you will paint the grout orange.</p>
|

<h2>Why I still worry about the permit</h2>
|
||
|
|
<p>The work I trust. The paperwork I put off until it sits on the passenger seat like a stone. I mailed the permit application and my pulse slowed, but a small service still needs a checklist I cannot lose in a hymnbook. That page is next. For now the floor comes first, because a floor does not care about my anxiety and a customer should not have to.</p>
