The street is a still life
until it isn’t.

+
+ +
+

I’m a 21-year-old patrol officer in Columbus, Ohio (founded 1812; county seat of Franklin; mayor Andrew Ginther). On shift I write the same way I bag a casing: time, place, orientation, who touched it. Off shift I paint abstracts from the industrial grain of the Short North and shoot the riverline the way I’d shoot a scene — overlapping, labeled, honest about what the frame leaves out.

+ +
+ Downtown Columbus skyline with LeVeque Tower against cloud +
FIG. 01 — Downtown Columbus, looking west. LeVeque is the vertical you navigate by after midnight. Photo: Pexels, RF.
+
+ +

Asimov’s robots had three laws. Le Guin had the ansible. I have a notebook in the breast pocket and a cheap 35mm I keep in the glove box so I don’t reach for the duty phone when the light on High Street goes copper. The job trains you to see what changed. Painting trains you to admit what you invented. Both are forms of custody.

+ +
A photograph that can’t survive cross-examination is just a pretty lie. Same rule for a canvas.

7-Field Observation Sketch

Every patrol call breaks into seven repeatable visual zones I trained on the Short North beat. This is the field template I redraw in my actual pocket notebook when paint and pigment run dry.

+
    +
  1. Light Vector — north-facing brick vs. sodium glare; note hard shadow edge.
  2. +
  3. Entry Vector — primary ingress point; secondary escape route; pedestrian flow.
  4. +
  5. Scene Depth — foreground (6 ft), mid (20 ft), horizon line (building parapet).
  6. +
  7. Color Drift — what hue the ambient light is pushing tonight (rust, steel, neon).
  8. +
  9. Texture Contrast — smooth concrete vs. rough brick vs. metal grate.
  10. +
  11. Suspicious Motion — anything against the regular rhythm of the block.
  12. +
  13. Community Anchor — storefront, mural, bus stop — what do people gather near?
  14. +
+ + Night patrol sketch overlay of Short North brick building with shadow vectors and entry points noted + +

Abstract Color Note — Short North Night Shift

+

Tonight's ambient color study. The sodium lamps + gallery signage push everything toward a burnt-umber / rust / deep-steel palette. I mix my report notes in these same pigments because the eye remembers color longer than words.

Cold Steel #5a5a5a

Crossover Method

+

As Le Guin wrote of seeing clearly: we see what we expect unless we name what we see. My seven fields force me to name each zone before writing the report. The color note locks the moment so the next shift's artist-officer can pick up the same wavelength.

Photograph the scene
like it will be read aloud.

+
+ +
+

Forensic photography is a photography genre and a branch of forensic science: the art of producing an accurate reproduction of a crime scene (Wikidata Q2918100). I am not a crime-scene tech. I am the first uniform on a lot of Third Shift calls in Columbus. My job with a camera is narrower and more perishable: freeze the room before EMS moves the chair, before rain takes the glass, before a well-meaning neighbor “tidies.”

+ +
+ Evidence marker placed on pavement at a scene +
FIG. 02 — Marker before narrative. Number first, story later. Pexels, RF. Training image, not a CPD scene.
+
+ +

What I inherited

+

Alphonse Bertillon (1853–1914), a French police officer and anthropometrist at the Prefecture of Police of Paris, is the ancestor I actually respect. He didn’t invent “taking a picture of a crime.” He invented a system: metric photography, standardized viewpoints, a body of measurements that could be compared later by someone who wasn’t there. He died in the 16th arrondissement in 1914. The Getty holds work under his name. I cite him because patrol officers still fail the thing he solved — we shoot what looks dramatic instead of what can be reconstructed.

+

Sources: entity: Alphonse Bertillon.

+ +

Chain of custody is not a slogan

+

A chain of custody is a legal concept (Wikidata Q738898): documentation of how an item — or an attribute of an item — is transferred, monitored, and controlled as it moves. It is a subclass of documentation, of chronology, and of evidence. It sits next to provenance. A JPEG sitting in my camera roll with no note is an orphan. An orphan cannot testify.

+

On a good night the chain for a patrol photo looks like this:

+
    +
  1. Create. Camera clock set to radio time before the shift. I check it against dispatch when I log on. If the clock is wrong, every later timestamp is a defense exhibit against me.
  2. +
  3. Label in the frame. A card, a glove wrapper, my notebook page with date / CAD / my badge — something that exists in the photograph, not only in a filename I’ll rename later.
  4. +
  5. Transfer. Offload to the report system before I go 10-42. Not “in the morning.” Morning is when cards get lost in cupholders.
  6. +
  7. Restrict. Personal phone is not a backup. Personal phone is a leak. I have seen a well-meant text become a Brady problem.
  8. +
  9. Account. If I delete a bad frame, I say so in the supplement: “three additional exposures discarded for motion blur; files not retained.” Silence reads as concealment.
  10. +
+

I told Fernando the same thing about a cash drawer: count it like evidence, or don’t pretend the count means anything. Different job, same chain. See also: chain of custody.

+ +
If you cannot say who held the file, you do not have a file. You have a rumor with pixels.
+ +

The twelve-shot minimum I actually run

+

Television wants the overhead God-shot. I get a parking lot, sodium vapor, and ninety seconds before the fire crew needs the doorway. This is the sequence I can finish on a cold sidewalk on the Near East Side. It is not a lab protocol. It is a patrol floor.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
#ShotWhy it existsFailure mode
1Approach — from the direction of arrival, whole façade or lot.Establishes how I entered and what a civilian would have seen.Zooming in. You lose the mailbox, the camera, the witness’s car.
2–5Four corners of the room / four sides of the vehicle. Overlap 30%.Lets someone later build a panorama without me.Standing in one spot and pivoting. Parallax lies.
6Floor / ground, from waist height, looking down the long axis.Blood, glass, casings, phone. Gravity is a witness.Shooting only at eye level. Most evidence is not at eye level.
7Ceiling / overhead (one frame).Spray, holes, a camera you will otherwise miss.Forgetting it. I forgot it for six months as a rookie.
8–9Mid-range: object in context (door + lock; table + bottle).Connects the close-up to the room.Jumping straight to the close-up. Courts hate orphans.
10Close-up with a scale in frame (dollar bill if that’s what you have).Size without a ruler is a guess.Using a coin and then not saying which coin.
11Close-up without the scale.Shows the surface you just covered.Only shooting with the scale — then the scale is accused of hiding a mark.
12ID slate: notebook page with CAD, date, my name, in the same light.Binds the set. Bertillon would have made me do this twice.Writing the slate later, in different light, in the car.
+ +

Machine-readable copy of this table: scene-protocol.json.

+ +

What I do not photograph

+

Victims in states that don’t serve the report. Bystanders’ children. The inside of a wallet I already inventoried in writing. Anything I would not want read into a record at 09:00 in front of a family. The camera is not a trophy case. Le Guin wrote that the revolution begins in the imagining of a different kind of person — I’ll settle for a different kind of file.

The Short North sits on High Street between downtown and campus — galleries, brick, a night market of neon that I walk after a day shift when I still have enough in the legs. I don’t paint “Columbus.” I paint the residue: oxide on a loading door behind Hubbard, the blue-gray of a window that hasn’t been washed since last Gallery Hop, the exact ochre of a hydrant that has been hit twice.

Method — same twelve-shot mind, different end

+

I use the scene protocol off duty, then I break it on purpose. Four façades, 30% overlap, a notebook slate with the date. Then I pick one rectangle — usually rust or a failed paint job — and I try to make a canvas that would fail in court and succeed on a wall. Accuracy is for the report. The painting is allowed to lie about color if it tells the truth about weight.

Adalberto said the first wash is an opening balance. On a canvas that’s true. On a scene, the first wash is contamination. Know which room you’re in.

Budget, because the job is not a stipend

+

Student loans and a patrol check. I buy student-grade acrylic in bulk and one tube of real ultramarine every quarter. Paper is the luxury: a pad of cold-press I cut down so a ruined study costs me a quarter-sheet, not a full one. The 35mm is a used body; I develop only the rolls that have a walk I can still smell. Thrift is a tactic, not an aesthetic.

The city under the paint

+

Columbus is a city of Ohio, a county seat, a big city in the United States, started in 1812. Those are the file facts. The lived fact is that High Street changes block by block the way a CAD map changes by hour — student rental, gallery, church basement, a lot that used to be a bar. I read both the same way: look for the edge where the pattern breaks.

Photography as the other notebook

+

Photography is an artistic technique, an academic discipline, a hobby, and an industry — invented in the lineage of Thomas Wedgwood, practiced as the recording of light (Q11633). On duty it is a record. Off duty it is how I steal time from a city that keeps moving. I do not post faces from the beat. I post brick.

Neighbor — watercolor as a safety map

Eneida’s Bridgeport routes (42 minutes, 14 stops; the return in 38) are the closest thing I’ve seen to a CAD printout that you could hang. Light wash = corridor that holds. Dark line = construction. I stole that contrast for the hydrant study.
