The Short North sits on High Street between downtown and campus — galleries, brick, a night market of neon that I walk after a day shift when I still have enough in the legs. I dont paint “Columbus.” I paint the residue: oxide on a loading door behind Hubbard, the blue-gray of a window that hasnt been washed since last Gallery Hop, the exact ochre of a hydrant that has been hit twice.

Method — same twelve-shot mind, different end

I use the scene protocol off duty, then I break it on purpose. Four façades, 30% overlap, a notebook slate with the date. Then I pick one rectangle — usually rust or a failed paint job — and I try to make a canvas that would fail in court and succeed on a wall. Accuracy is for the report. The painting is allowed to lie about color if it tells the truth about weight.

Adalberto said the first wash is an opening balance. On a canvas thats true. On a scene, the first wash is contamination. Know which room youre in.

Budget, because the job is not a stipend

Student loans and a patrol check. I buy student-grade acrylic in bulk and one tube of real ultramarine every quarter. Paper is the luxury: a pad of cold-press I cut down so a ruined study costs me a quarter-sheet, not a full one. The 35mm is a used body; I develop only the rolls that have a walk I can still smell. Thrift is a tactic, not an aesthetic.

The city under the paint

Columbus is a city of Ohio, a county seat, a big city in the United States, started in 1812. Those are the file facts. The lived fact is that High Street changes block by block the way a CAD map changes by hour — student rental, gallery, church basement, a lot that used to be a bar. I read both the same way: look for the edge where the pattern breaks.

Photography as the other notebook

Photography is an artistic technique, an academic discipline, a hobby, and an industry — invented in the lineage of Thomas Wedgwood, practiced as the recording of light (Q11633). On duty it is a record. Off duty it is how I steal time from a city that keeps moving. I do not post faces from the beat. I post brick.

Eneidas Bridgeport routes (42 minutes, 14 stops; the return in 38) are the closest thing Ive seen to a CAD printout that you could hang. Light wash = corridor that holds. Dark line = construction. I stole that contrast for the hydrant study.
