Forensic photography is a photography genre and a branch of forensic science: the art of producing an accurate reproduction of a crime scene (Wikidata Q2918100). I am not a crime-scene tech. I am the first uniform on a lot of Third Shift calls in Columbus. My job with a camera is narrower and more perishable: freeze the room before EMS moves the chair, before rain takes the glass, before a well-meaning neighbor “tidies.”

What I inherited

Alphonse Bertillon (18531914), a French police officer and anthropometrist at the Prefecture of Police of Paris, is the ancestor I actually respect. He didnt invent “taking a picture of a crime.” He invented a system: metric photography, standardized viewpoints, a body of measurements that could be compared later by someone who wasnt there. He died in the 16th arrondissement in 1914. The Getty holds work under his name. I cite him because patrol officers still fail the thing he solved — we shoot what looks dramatic instead of what can be reconstructed.

Chain of custody is not a slogan

A chain of custody is a legal concept (Wikidata Q738898): documentation of how an item — or an attribute of an item — is transferred, monitored, and controlled as it moves. It is a subclass of documentation, of chronology, and of evidence. It sits next to provenance. A JPEG sitting in my camera roll with no note is an orphan. An orphan cannot testify.

On a good night the chain for a patrol photo looks like this:

Create. Camera clock set to radio time before the shift. I check it against dispatch when I log on. If the clock is wrong, every later timestamp is a defense exhibit against me.

Label in the frame. A card, a glove wrapper, my notebook page with date / CAD / my badge — something that exists in the photograph, not only in a filename Ill rename later.

Transfer. Offload to the report system before I go 10-42. Not “in the morning.” Morning is when cards get lost in cupholders.

Restrict. Personal phone is not a backup. Personal phone is a leak. I have seen a well-meant text become a Brady problem.

Account. If I delete a bad frame, I say so in the supplement: “three additional exposures discarded for motion blur; files not retained.” Silence reads as concealment.

I told Fernando the same thing about a cash drawer: count it like evidence, or dont pretend the count means anything. Different job, same chain. See also: chain of custody.

The twelve-shot minimum I actually run

Television wants the overhead God-shot. I get a parking lot, sodium vapor, and ninety seconds before the fire crew needs the doorway. This is the sequence I can finish on a cold sidewalk on the Near East Side. It is not a lab protocol. It is a patrol floor.

What I do not photograph

Victims in states that dont serve the report. Bystanders children. The inside of a wallet I already inventoried in writing. Anything I would not want read into a record at 09:00 in front of a family. The camera is not a trophy case. Le Guin wrote that the revolution begins in the imagining of a different kind of person — Ill settle for a different kind of file.
