<p>Every instrument lies to you eventually. The thermometer cracks in your pocket, the infrared gun reads the reflection of your own breath, and the digital gauge dies when you need it most—standing over a weld at midnight with a frozen pipe waiting.</p>

<p>I learned this the hard way on my first winter job out of high school. Boss man handed me a torch and told me to heat-bend a copper elbow for a radiator line. I watched the dial, hit what looked like the right number, and bent it anyway. The pipe cracked clean through because I'd trusted the gauge instead of watching the metal itself.</p>
