+ Here is the part I understand better than most, because it crosses into my trade. The human eye is a nervous instrument built for relief. It scans for edges, for something to hold. A forest gives you a thousand resting stops in an acre. A prairie gives you one — the horizon — and it never gets close, and it never gets interesting. Doctors who wrote about prairie madness said the flatness itself was part of the sickness: the absence of visual variety leaves the mind without its usual anchors. I have felt it. It's the reason I photograph in black and white — because stripping the color away forces you to reckon with shape and distance, and I want to see the thing plain. +

When I mentor a young baker or a frame-maker or a kid with a t-shirt idea, and they tell me they're quitting because the work is lonely and nothing's happening — that's the same horizon talking. Not a lack of talent. Not a lack of effort. Just the terrible, honest flatness of the middle of the work, where nothing rises and nobody's watching and the eye has nothing to hold onto. +
