<p>The Negros Fruit Dove (<em>Ptilinopus neglectus</em>) is a critically endangered bird species found on the island of Negros in the Philippines. This small, plump bird is known less from observation than from a 1953 description and a single grainy still — which is part of what makes it so quietly haunting. It exists whether or not anyone alive has proof of it in hand.</p>
<p>I'm a personal care aide in Houston, not an ornithologist. But the shape of this bird's problem is the shape of care work: the thing that matters survives on memory and modest effort until someone documents it back into the present. That's the thread of this page.</p>
<p>The Negros Fruit Dove inhabits the lowland forests of Negros, where it feeds on a variety of fruits. Its habitat is under acute threat from deforestation — Negros has lost the vast majority of its original forest cover to sugarcane and logging, pushing this bird to the very edge (or past it).</p>
<p>Conservation efforts for the Negros Fruit Dove center on habitat restoration, anti-poaching protections, and public education campaigns. The bird is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. These efforts are the rescue rope for a species whose remaining proof is a description and a still.</p>
