Hydraulic System Troubleshooting for Drilling Rigs

+

Practical guide by Alwyn Phillips - San Pablo, CA

+
+ +
+

Introduction

+

Hydraulic systems are the lifeblood of drilling rigs. When they fail, the whole operation stops. This guide covers the most common hydraulic issues I've encountered in the field and how to diagnose them quickly.

+ +
A worker operates a water well drilling rig under illumination during nighttime.
+

A typical hydraulic drilling rig in operation

+ +
+ Note: Always follow proper safety procedures when working with hydraulic systems. High-pressure fluid can cause serious injury. +
+
+ +
+

Understanding Hydraulic Systems

+

Hydraulic systems use pressurized fluid to transmit power. In drilling rigs, they control:

+ + +

Key components include:

+ + +
  • hydraulics — fluid engineering and fluid mechanics
  • Hydraulics — Musical work
  • Hydraulics — EP, released 2014-11-10

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Process

+ +
    +
  1. +

    Visual Inspection

    +

    Check for obvious issues:

    +
      +
    • Fluid leaks under the rig
    • +
    • Damaged hoses or fittings
    • +
    • Low fluid level in reservoir
    • +
    • Loose or damaged electrical connections

  3. +

    Check Pressure Gauges

    +

    Compare readings to manufacturer specifications:

    +
      +
    • Normal operating pressure: 2000-3000 psi
    • +
    • Maximum pressure: 3500 psi
    • +
    • Low pressure indicates pump issues
    • +
    • High pressure indicates blockages
    • +
    +
  4. + +
  5. +

    Test Individual Components

    +

    Isolate and test each component:

    +
      +
    • Pump: Check flow rate and pressure output
    • +
    • Valves: Test for proper opening/closing
    • +
    • Actuators: Check for smooth operation
    • +
    • Filters: Inspect for clogging
    • +
    +
  6. + +
  7. +

    Fluid Analysis

    +

    Check hydraulic fluid condition:

    +
      +
    • Color: Should be clear/amber, not dark or milky
    • +
    • Smell: Should not have burnt odor
    • +
    • Viscosity: Should flow smoothly, not too thick or thin
    • +
    • Contamination: Check for water or particles
    • +
    +
+ Pro Tip: Keep spare hydraulic fluid on site. Contaminated fluid is the #1 cause of hydraulic failures. +

01THE TWO-MINUTE LISTEN

+

Every morning, before the spin-up, I take two minutes with the rig. Hydraulics hum a note — a steady pump is a clean A. A skip in the stroke means air in the line, and air gets fixed on the ground, not fifty feet down where nobody's watching your gauges but you.

+

The drill won't lie to you. Aluminum lies, torque specs argue, but the feel of the rod through your boots is the truest instrument on any site.

What I do, plain
+
    +
  • Earth-drilling — auger and mud-rotary rigs for foundations, water wells, environmental bores. I run the controls and I read the ground.
  • +
  • Field hydraulics — a pump that hesitates costs the whole crew daylight. I keep the pressure steady before it costs anything.
  • +
  • Crew mentor — the new hands learn to feel the rod through their boots before they learn the dials. That order matters.

04THE CREW AROUND ME

+

Torque is a language we all speak. My neighbor Calvin spent forty years reading wrenches and still trusts his hand over the print — same school as the two-minute listen, different machine. Check his work:

+ + +

05WHEN IT'S NOT EARTH

+

Rigs aren't the only machines with a heartbeat. I build cars — carbureted and swapped — and the same logic holds: a clean idle is a clean fire. And when the wrenches are down, I DJ. The rhythm of two turntables is the rhythm of a steady pump: if you lose the beat, you lose the room.

Rig Gear, Field Reference

+

Not the marketing cut-sheet. This is the reference I actually keep in the cab — the hydraulics, the fluids, and the two-minute listen. Nothing here gets you a certification; it gets you through the morning without a rebuild.

+ + + +

Hydraulic fluids — the lifeblood

+
+
+

The fluid carries the signal. A good system wants a stable viscosity that holds across the heat of a long run, water and sludge kept out, and a film that sticks to seals. When viscosity thins in the heat, the whole circuit loses pressure and the rod starts to tell you lies.

+ + + + + +
FLUIDBEST FOR
Mineral oilStandard rigs, general use, cheap to replace
Water-glycolFire-risk sites, but thinner film — watch seals
SyntheticCold starts and hot runs; costs more, lasts
+
+
+ Offshore platform, hydraulic-scale machinery +
SCALE ISN'T THE POINT — PRESSURE IS, AT ANY SIZE
+
+
+ +

The two-minute listen

+
SEQUENCE, NO SKIPPING. 1) Start at the pump, listen for a clean steady hum — a skip means air in the line. 2) Walk the hoses, hand over each fitting, feel for heat and pulse. 3) Put a foot on the deckplate below the swivel — the rod talks through your boot. 4) Pull the sample, check it against the morning's color. Two minutes. No exceptions.
+

A skip in that stroke is air in the line. Air costs you seals, costs you head pressure, and — fifty feet down — costs you a stuck drill and a whole lost day. Fix it on the surface or pay for it in the ground.

+ +

Red flags that stop the spin

+ + + + + + +
WHAT YOU HEAR / FEELWHAT IT ISMOVE
Silence at the swivelLost prime, or a blown seal upstreamStop. Re-prime before anything turns.
Knock on the up-strokeInternal bypass in the cylinderTest pressure, don't trust the gauge alone.
Hot fitting that stays hotRestriction or collapsing hose wallTrace the line, flex it, feel for the soft spot.
Milky fluid in the sampleWater's in the tankDrain, flush, find the breather leak.
+ +

A drilling rig is an integrated system that bites down in a straight line — understand the pressure path and you understand the whole machine. Humans and pressure keep the same secret: a steady signal reads honest, a scared one stutters.

Before the spin-up, before a single tooth bites dirt, I take the two-minute listen. That's the rule on my crew. The film walks you through it — the hydraulics hum, the air in the line, and the feel of the rod through your boots that no gauge can replace.

+ +
WHY THIS FILM. Machines talk. Most of us stopped listening somewhere between the torque spec and the printout. This is the argument for the hand and the boot over the dial — not because dials lie, but because the honest seconds before you commit are the whole job.
