The short version

I'm Angela Debrow — a retired community arts organizer and abstract painter in Phoenix, Arizona. For thirty years I ran neighborhood art programs: senior workshops in the church basement, summer classes for the kids across the street, and one stubbornly patient watercolor circle that met every Tuesday until the building sold. I organized the arts, but I taught the discipline.

My own painting is abstract and it leans on an old, mineral palette — ochre, umber, sienna, and the quiet browns most painters forget. Trained formally enough to hate it and self-taught enough to love it, I paint the way I organize: method first, then the letting-go that makes a canvas breathe.

A life carried forward

I came of age in the civil-rights years, and it taught me that art is not a luxury — it is a way of holding the floor. The senior painters I taught were mostly women who had never once been told their eye mattered. Watching them learn to trust their hand again is the accomplishment I'd point to before any canvas I ever made.

That generation is passing, and I keep their lessons in public now: ground your own pigment, mix umber before you reach for black, know the value of a shadow, and let a painting sit the way memory sits — patient and refusing to be hurried.
