<p>Mulch is a blanket that breathes. Water is budgeted like the grocery money. And the fair-weather gardeners quit in August — but the ones who stayed are the ones who eat. A slow walk through the morning ritual that keeps the Third Ward feeding itself when the heat means to starve it.</p>

<p>I keep two ledgers — one for money, one for mercy. The Negros Fruit Dove of the Philippines is nearly gone, one specimen at a time. If a bird can be loved into staying, it ought to be.</p>

<p>A Houston summer is a test of character. A garden owes you nothing; you owe it discipline. These are the numbers I live by when the mercury climbs:</p>
