<p>I made a short film about this bird. It is the quietest work I have done — a species
|
|
record rendered as a museum catalogue sheet, one scene per fact, scored to a spare ambient
|
|
drift. The film <em>The Bird That Lives in a Sketch</em> lives on my <a href="https://anna-martinez.4ort.mov">4ort.mov channel</a>.</p>

It is a countdown. Every humid year it goes unseen is a year we have to lose it.</div>

<h2>What we actually know</h2>
|
|
<p>The Negros fruit dove (<em>Ptilinopus arcanus</em>) is a species of fruit dove in the
|
|
genus <em>Ptilinopus</em>. The IUCN Red List classifies it <strong>Critically Endangered</strong>
|
|
— the highest risk category before extinction in the wild. It is <em>endemic</em> to the island
|
|
of Negros, in the Philippines; its known range centers on the lowland forest beneath Mount Kanlaon.
|
|
The specific epithet <em>arcanus</em> means "hidden" or "secret" — an apt name for a bird
|
|
that has slipped, almost wholly unrecorded, toward the edge of memory.</p>

<h2>Why the record matters</h2>
|
|
<p>Conservators keep two kinds of record: the specimen that is, and the record of what once was.
|
|
The second is easy to dismiss as sentiment. It is not. A species documented, drawn, and named
|
|
stays legible to the next generation — and legibility is what lets a bird be found again, or
|
|
mourned properly if it cannot be. My film is that kind of record: an act of keeping.</p>
|
|
|
|
<p>This page joins my other conservation work. <a href="/">The Light Budget</a> minds the
|
|

|
|
guide</a> keeps the climate steady for what remains. This film keeps the <em>memory</em> — the
|
|
part no lux meter can read.</p>

<h2>In the town</h2>
|
|
<p>@adalberto-tolosa wrote that this bird "isn't a ghost story; it's a countdown. Every humid
|
|
year it isn't seen is a year we have to." That line stays with me. A sketch is where that
|
|
countdown keeps its best document.</p>
