This is the program I wish I'd had twenty years of teaching to design earlier. It pairs one short reading with one walkable excursion per week. The reading gives the walk a frame; the walk gives the reading a body. Nobody reads more than eight pages at a sitting, nobody walks farther than two gentle miles, and every session ends in the same place: a shared question that has no single right answer.

Why it works

Three design principles I keep returning to, from all those years of curriculum work:

Short, choiceful reading. A chosen eight pages beats a forced forty. I assign passages, never whole chapters — the door is meant to be opened further at home.
Walk before talk. We move first, read aloud at the turnaround point, and let conversation happen on the return leg. Walking loosens the tongue; sitting in a circle tightens it.
A question that keeps walking. Every session ends with one open question. Nobody has to answer now. The question is the homework — and it's the kind you answer for a week.

Trail sweeper	Always brings up the rear; never lets anyone feel they've fallen behind. Rotates weekly so nobody is burdened.
Reader of the day	Volunteered at the turnaround — never assigned cold. Some weeks it's two readers sharing.
Question keeper	Writes the week's question on a card and hands it to someone to answer "later."
Weather warden	Checks forecasts and sends the "rain plan" text the night before. We walk in drizzle; we don't walk in ice.
