<p>There is a story I tell my apprentices about the first time I broke a bowl. It was a simple thing, a ceramic mug I’d bought at a flea market in Asheville. I dropped it on the workshop floor, and it shattered into a dozen pieces. My heart sank. I had spent weeks polishing the glaze, trying to make it perfect.</p>

|
<p>But then I remembered the old Japanese art of <em>Kintsugi</em>. In Japan, when a bowl breaks, they don’t throw it away. Instead, they glue the pieces back together using lacquer mixed with gold dust. The cracks don’t hide; they shine. The broken bowl becomes more beautiful than it ever was before.</p>

<p>I spent three weeks fixing that mug. I mixed the lacquer myself, just like the old masters did. I dusted the seams with real gold powder, the kind I bought from a tiny shop in downtown Morganton. When I held it up to the light, the cracks glowed like veins of gold in a mountain stone.</p>
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
<p>Now, that mug sits on my workbench. Every time I look at it, I remember that mistakes are just lessons in disguise. Every crack tells a story. And every story deserves to be told.</p>
